Reading Minds

Have you ever tried reading other people's mind? I'm sure you have. Perhaps most of you also have noticed that other people are constantly trying to read your mind. Other people, too, may have noticed that you have noticed that they are trying to read your mind. This volley balling of mind reading just keeps on going and going.

So, what's the big deal?

I hypothesize most of us aren't that good at hitting the ball over the net and we follow a very consistent pattern:

Level 0: We say what we mean to say.
Level 1: We say things based on what other people would think of us.
Level 2: We say things based on knowing that other people know that we say things based on what other people would think of us.
Level 3, 4, 5, 6, and so on..

Most people, I'd say lie in between level 0 and 3 inclusive. The distribution graph, I'd say, would look like a exponential decay function. In addition, I'd say, the fluctuation of their level of mind reading would be very small between any two people. (each relationship is viewed independently)

If my hypothesis is true, you can use this to your own "advantage". This requires you to collect some data from the person you wish to mind read. By performing a statistical analysis, you should be able to read their mind.

In order to reduce the number of factors that affects our mind reading level, it's best to use computer to filter the interaction between two individuals, such as networked computer poker game.

Well, I must note that this idea is not all that genuine and I place doubt on every statements I've made for this posting. I'm writing this to make you think I'm sophisticated individual as well as attempting to pollute the data you have already collected on me, thus hindering your ability to read my mind, even though the writing of this posting contradicts it.

Also, please note that, the more capable you are at reading other people's mind, the more dramatic your mistake will be. And, even if you can read people minds' all the time, that doesn't gurantee you happiness.

Please, I welcome your comments.

The Extremes: #2

Should people be judged by the effect of their action or their original intent?

If people were to be judged solely by their original intent, effects of an act perceived as maligned, may be equally justified when compared to any other justifications.

The Extremes: #1

To live, or to die.

From my perspective, people tend to support the former. Not supporting the latter myself, I am still interested in knowing how it would be like if people, by default, support the latter. I speculate, if we were to support the latter by default, we'd be perceived as devils from today's standards. However, even though we'd be perceived differently, our nature would not change nor will we be burdened by our own conscience.

Many things in live comes with two opposing extremes. Some are obvious, some are unclear. I often find myself thinking about many different sets of extremes. I will from now on, identify them, and speculate on their effects. In the following journal entries, I will share with you my learnings. Please leave comments if you have any.

I went to the ICS career fair yesterday. One speaker said, "It's not just about what you know, but who you know." Another took a bolder step and said, "It's not about what you know, but who you know."

When they start saying that, you know the market is bad.

David likes to solve problems, but not all.

Problems that he specifically enjoy solving are the ones that require synthesis of smaller objects into a bigger one.

Apparently, cost of material objects hinders him from playing with them. This would explain why he likes the software realm of the computer world, because he can enjoy synthesis at virtually no cost.

My interview went well today. I was told that my resume as well as my work were "impressive." However, they didn't like the idea that I'm taking 17 units. Even though I suggested, they didn't want me to drop any of my classes either. Another interesting thing was that one of the interviewer turned out to be my classmate from last quarter~ No wonder she looked so familiar.

It's funny how they asked, "What games do you play?"

I paused for a few second and said, "uh..."

"Aww.. Don't tell me you don't play any games! If you don't play any games, I'm not going to hire you!"

"I use to play games...," I said. "Doom..."

"NOW That's a goOd game~"

Blah... I don't know why they ask me what games do i play...blah.. is it a good thing if i said i don't play any games?

oh well... at least in the end... they gave me thumbs up~

hehe... my happy day~
